ICT & structured networking
BM plans and installs structured network cabling, switching and Wi-Fi around the way a building is used. The aim is clear coverage, manageable equipment and traceable connections.

A CONSIDERED SCOPE
Offices, shops, hotels and institutions connecting workstations, wireless users, IP cameras and telephone systems.
Your quotation should set out the assessed equipment, installation, documentation and agreed delivery terms.

Consider access-point placement, PoE budget, uplinks and separation of guest, office and security traffic. Internet service subscriptions are confirmed separately.
EQUIPMENT & APPROACH
Data cable and outlets; patch panels and cabinets; managed switches and PoE where needed; access points; router/firewall and backup power as specified.
Explore equipment & specification guidance ↗Map users, devices, rooms and expected traffic. Inspect cable routes and wireless obstacles, agree port and power requirements, then install, label and test links and coverage against the agreed brief.
Maintain a port schedule and configuration backups, control administrator access and review updates under an agreed plan. Reassess coverage when partitions, user numbers or device locations change.
THE TECHNICAL BRIEF
BM networking covers structured cabling, switching, routing and assessed Wi-Fi coverage for homes, offices, hotels and institutions.
| Option / application | What to assess |
|---|---|
| Cabled backbone | Plan copper or fibre links, distance, route, termination, rack layout and testing. Advertised port speed alone does not establish end-to-end performance. |
| Managed Wi-Fi | AP location, building materials, user density, channel planning and backhaul affect coverage. A strong signal reading is not the same as usable capacity. |
| Segmentation and PoE | Separate guest, staff, voice and security traffic where required. Check PoE standard, per-port demand and total switch power budget. |
Discuss UPS support, labelled ports, configuration backups, administrator ownership and fault escalation. Secondary internet depends on available providers and a tested failover design, not a promise of uninterrupted connectivity.
CCTV and IP telephones use the network too. Agree addressing, VLANs, voice prioritisation and capacity with the systems they support before installation.
No. Interference, poor backhaul, incorrect placement or overloaded uplinks may be the cause. Assess the site and usage before adding hardware.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Not always. Internet service, interference, placement, cabling and user demand should be checked before equipment is added.
This can be included in the network design where the selected equipment supports it. Define access rules and management responsibilities in the brief.
