Coverage before camera count
Coverage, lighting, mounting height and privacy boundaries guide the choice of camera and lens. Discuss night conditions and the detail you need to recognize.

CCTV installation & surveillance
BM plans and installs CCTV camera systems for homes, shops, offices and institutional premises. The assessment starts with what you need to see, record and retrieve—not simply the number of cameras.

A CONSIDERED SCOPE
Entrances, tills, stores, parking areas and shared circulation routes; each needs a different view and lighting assessment.
Your quotation should set out the assessed equipment, installation, documentation and agreed delivery terms.

Match DVR/NVR compatibility, PoE needs and storage to the recording schedule. Retention depends on bitrate, resolution, activity and drive capacity.
EQUIPMENT & APPROACH
IP or compatible analogue cameras; fixed or variable lenses; DVR/NVR recorders; surveillance storage; PoE switches, cabling and backup power.
Explore equipment & specification guidance ↗Walk the site and agree camera views, privacy boundaries and required recording period. Confirm cable routes, recorder location and power. Install, test daytime/night-time views, then demonstrate playback and controlled user access.
Schedule lens cleaning, recorder time checks, sample playback and storage-health checks. Review remote-access users when staff change; a live image alone does not prove recording is working.
THE TECHNICAL BRIEF
Start with what must be seen: an entrance identity, a till transaction, a vehicle approach or a broad yard. The same camera is rarely right for every view.
| Option / application | What to assess |
|---|---|
| IP cameras + NVR | Network cameras use Ethernet; check PoE power, recording bandwidth, channel licences where applicable and supported camera features. |
| Analogue HD + DVR | Existing coaxial cable may be reusable after testing. Match the camera signal format and resolution to the DVR; an NVR is not a direct substitute. |
| Fixed lens, varifocal or PTZ | A wide view covers more space but gives less detail at distance. Varifocal lenses refine framing; PTZ needs a monitoring strategy and does not watch every direction at once. |
Retention depends on camera count, codec, bitrate, frame rate, recording schedule and usable disk capacity. Ask for a storage calculation rather than a fixed number of days based only on terabytes.
Check faces and movement in the actual lighting, including backlit entrances and reflections. Bullet, dome and turret describe housings; none alone guarantees a particular night image. Agree user accounts, remote access and playback/export training at handover.
No. Lens, distance, mounting angle, lighting, motion and compression all matter. Agree the required detail at each view during assessment and test it before handover.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Possibly. Share camera and recorder model numbers; compatibility, image quality and cable condition must be assessed before reuse is included in a quotation.
It depends on camera count, resolution, recording settings and retention period. State how many days you need; storage must be calculated for the chosen configuration.
